Multi-room audio, built around the Mac you already have
You do not need a Sonos household, a Roon core or an amplifier rack in a cupboard. If every room has something that speaks AirPlay, the Mac can be the source — and this is how to make that arrangement actually behave.

Audio route
The architecture, in one paragraph
One machine plays. One stream leaves it. Every room receives that same stream and plays it at the same agreed moment. That is the whole design, and it is what AirPlay 2 does natively — the missing piece on macOS is simply something that will hand it system audio rather than only what Apple's own apps are playing.
Get that shape right and the rest is housekeeping: which rooms group together, how loud each one is, and what the low end does when two speakers face each other through a doorway.
Six things, in this order

Put every speaker on one network
AirPlay discovery runs on Bonjour, which does not cross subnets. One SSID, no guest network, and client isolation off. This is the single most common reason a speaker "does not appear".

Pair anything that asks for a code
Some receivers want a four-digit PIN or a fixed password the first time. Do it once — the key is stored and it never asks again.

Decide which rooms belong together
Save one group per occasion rather than one giant group: Whole house, Downstairs, Party, Desk. Recalling the right one is faster than editing the wrong one.

Set the per-room balance once
A kitchen speaker on a tiled wall is louder than a bedroom one on a rug. Set the relative levels once, then use the master for everything after.

Fix the low end before you fix anything else
Turn on bass mono-ing. Correlated low frequencies arriving in one room from two directions cancel — it sounds like the bass has been removed rather than shifted.

Leave the limiter on
The 16-bit conversion at the end of the chain hard-clips at ±1. The look-ahead limiter has constant latency whether it is engaged or not, so there is no reason to switch it off.
Questions
How many speakers before Wi-Fi gives up?
Four to six is comfortable on a decent access point. Every speaker is another stream on the air, and the limit is airtime rather than bandwidth — many small packets to many clients is harder on Wi-Fi than one large flow.
If a distant room drops out first, that is your answer: move it to 5 GHz, add an access point, or wire it.
Why does one room drop out and come back?
Almost always the wireless link rather than the software. Check that the speaker is not on a different band or access point from the Mac, that the Mac is not roaming between two APs mid-song, and that 2.4 GHz is not congested. Troubleshooting walks through it.
Should speakers be wired instead?
Where you can, yes. An Apple TV or a WiiM on Ethernet is dramatically more stable than the same device on 2.4 GHz, and it takes one stream off the air for everything else.
Do the speakers actually stay in sync?
SoundFerry manages playback across selected speakers. Timing depends on the devices and network; SoundFerry provides per-speaker delay adjustment. Try your speaker combination before purchasing. No fixed synchronization accuracy is guaranteed.
How much delay is there?
The managed default audio path adds several seconds of delay. It is intended for listening rather than live instrument monitoring, gaming or video calls. Video playback may need delay compensation.
What does the equalizer actually do?
Group-wide EQ, dynamics and reverb process the shared audio before it reaches the speakers. The same processing applies to every selected output.
Can't macOS do this already?
SoundFerry makes a virtual macOS output available to apps and routes it to selected network speakers. App-specific AirPlay features are a separate way to play audio.
How much is it, and is it a subscription?
19 USD buys a perpetual license for version 1.x. Updates such as 1.0 to 1.1 are included. Version 2.x requires a separate purchase, with pricing not yet decided. There is no subscription. Other currencies are converted from the USD price.
What do I need?
macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon, compatible AirPlay or Chromecast speakers on the same network, and administrator authentication to install the driver. The distributed PKG is for Apple Silicon.
